Two Years and 150 Weddings: Tips & Tricks for Utah County

We're just over our two-year mark at La Fête, and if there's one thing running a venue in the heart of downtown Provo teaches you, it's that no two weddings — and no two couples — are the same. We've watched quite a few couples come through this building, from first walkthrough to last dance, and somewhere in all that we picked up a handful of patterns that keep showing up no matter who's getting married.

Here's what we've learned, in no particular order.

The Utah County way — you can plan a great wedding in three or four months

Our brides prove it every day: you don't need a year and a half to pull off a day you'll love. We see it constantly — couples come in nervous because they're "only" a few months out, convinced they're behind schedule compared to everyone else's eighteen-month Pinterest boards. Once you've locked in your date, venue, and a few key vendors, everything else comes together faster than you'd think.

Three to four months is more than enough time to nail those down. Take your top three picks in each category, have a conversation, and finalize. For every vendor category, we're happy to hand you our preferred vendor list and tell you exactly why we recommend who's on it.

Don't sweat the small stuff

The truth is, most of the tiny details you're agonizing over right now — the exact shade of ribbon, whether the napkins are folded just so, whether the table cards match the invitation font — few people will notice on the day. Not your guests, not your in-laws, not even you, once you're in full party mode.

That energy is better spent on the handful of things that will actually matter to you a year from now: who's standing next to you, how much your family and friends enjoy themselves, whether you actually got to eat dinner.

Let your besties help with the little things

You don't have to be the one running place cards to tables, tracking down a guest book pen, or chasing the extra folding chair someone forgot. Delegate the small stuff to your wedding party, your siblings, your cousins — whoever's around and willing.

People generally want to help; they just need to be asked and given something specific to do. Handing off the little logistics frees you up to actually be present at your own wedding instead of running it like a stage manager.

If you skip the full DJ, get an emcee with personality

The dance party often matters, but so does having someone keep the day moving and the energy up. A great reception isn't just a good playlist streaming in the background — it's someone who knows how to work a mic, when to get people onto the dance floor, and when to let a quiet moment breathe.

If you're skipping a professional DJ, make sure to hand mic duty to an outgoing friend or sibling — someone with the personality to actually carry a room. It makes a bigger difference than people expect. And if you want to keep it simple, we've got a built-in DIY DJ booth on-site set up for exactly that, so you or your emcee can run the music yourselves without renting extra equipment.

It's your wedding — do what you want

You don't have to do things the way they've always been done. Talk to your parents, talk to your partner's family, keep the traditions that genuinely mean something to you, and leave the rest on the table without guilt.

Don't want a receiving line? Skip it. Want a bouquet toss even though hardly anyone does them anymore? Do it anyway. This is the one day you actually get to decide, and the couples who lean into that tend to have the most fun and build the best memories.

You don't need a wedding planner — but they help

Plenty of couples pull off gorgeous weddings without one. But if it's an option for you, a planner or even a day-of coordinator takes real weight off your shoulders, especially in the last few weeks when the small decisions start piling up.

It's not a requirement, just a real convenience — and here's the thing: at La Fête, you don't have to choose between the two. Every single booking comes with complimentary wedding planning, full stop. No upcharge, no tiered package, no "planning-lite" version. You get a real person walking you through the process, keeping you on track, and catching the details you didn't know to look for — the exact kind of guidance couples elsewhere pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for.

It's honestly one of the things we're proudest of offering, and one of the biggest reasons couples tell us planning felt easy instead of overwhelming.

Treat vendor tastings like a date

Most caterers will let you sample the menu before you commit — take full advantage of it. Instead of treating it like another item on the checklist, turn it into an actual date night with your partner.

Get dressed up, go taste some food together, and enjoy the process. It's one of the more genuinely fun parts of planning that couples rush through and later wish they'd slowed down for. This works for the treat vendors too - from beignets to ice cream and beyond - they love having you in and tasting their offerings.

Save where it counts

There are plenty of ways to bring the cost of a wedding down without cutting corners on how the day actually looks and feels. Our decor package is a good example — it saves you significantly compared to sourcing and buying your own decorations piece by piece, and you're not stuck storing or reselling any of it afterward.

The same goes for working with Kennedy, our in-house florist. Because she's right here on-site with us, she can offer La Fête couples a bit of a discount compared to booking a florist elsewhere, without any of the coordination headache of bringing in an outside vendor.

Breathe. Enjoy it.

It sounds obvious, but it's the thing couples forget most in the moment. The day moves fast — faster than almost anyone expects — and it's easy to spend it managing logistics instead of living in it.

Take thirty seconds during the reception to actually stop, look around the room, and take it in. This is one of the only days in your life you'll be surrounded by every person who matters to you, all in one place, all there for you. Don't let it blur past.

You don't know what you don't know — and that's fine

If you're not sure how something's usually done, what order things go in, or who's supposed to give a toast when, just ask us. Every single couple feels like a fish out of water the first time they sit down to plan a wedding. That's completely normal; nobody grows up knowing this stuff. It clicks faster than you'd think, and we're here to walk you through it — that's exactly what our complimentary wedding planning is for. You're not expected to arrive as an expert. We're here to help.

Almost two years in, and the biggest thing we've learned is this: the couples who have the best day are the ones who tackle things one at a time, sweat the big stuff, and let others help with the rest.

Got questions about your own timeline, budget, or how any of this works? Reach out — that's exactly what we're here for.
